Disruptive innovation was first introduced by Bower and Christensen (1995) in order to describe how new technology responds to unserved needs. The technology on product attributes is improved in order to manufacture a new product not valued by mainstream customers. A disruptive innovation is often a much more simple, low-grade solution that’s more affordable and accessible to a larger population, which opens it to an entirely new market. This often upturns established industries and overthrows existing market leaders.
In a nutshell, Frugal Education is the process of leveraging available resources, trailing edge-technologies, and design thinking to create engaging, scalable, and sustainable pedagogic practice.The concept takes its inspiration from the practices of Frugal Innovation: the art of reducing the complexity and cost of products and services, and their production, to meet the needs of developing countries, conscious consumerism, and sustainability. My name is Alex Masters and I’m an Innovation Technologist, Multimedia Designer, and practice-based researcher based at Coventry University’s Disruptive Media Learning Lab.
